We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who request that Metro Vancouver appoint a task force to investigate the potential effects of a declining global oil supply on the Vancouver metropolitan area.
Prices for the food we import are rising fast, while our local farmland is being eaten up by development and our farmers slowly go out of business. Gasoline prices are skyrocketing, yet we’re preparing to increase our dependency on car travel by spending billions on the Gateway Project. We’re expanding our airport while jet fuel becomes increasing unaffordable. BC’s economy has become increasingly dependent on limited supplies of oil, natural gas, minerals, and other declining resources. We export our clean hydro-power electricity to the US, while importing dirty coal-fired electricity from Alberta. The connecting thread in this Big Picture is ENERGY, and the global supply of it is about to peak. Metro Vancouver (spanning the Greater Vancouver, Howe Sound, Fraser Valley & Sunshine Coasts Regional Districts) needs to prepare, give its citizens new and better options, and become sustainable in a future of limited supplies of fossil fuels and other resources, before energy shortages become a crisis.

"rather than focusing on solutions to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and consumption, our government is loaning our dollars to support the car industry and encourage Canadians to buy more cars - help! we need a new plan!"

"The global End Game for oil has begun. Multi-national economies will no longer sustain our lives. Localization & Permaculture remain our only logical direction. Act NOW!"

"This and many other atrocities are all part of natfa. But a contract is not a contract unless it benifits all parties involved. Have the poorest children in Canada benifited? Have the homeless benifited? Time to take action. The next elections, federal, civic and provincial must be our stage for change.

"Do you eat? If your answer was yes, I would ponder just how and where you think Metro Vancouver's 2 1/4 million people (especially the poor) will find enough calories to survive when fuel becomes prohibitively expensive to grow and deliver food as we do now. It’s time to create a diverse, secure and sovereign local food system that’s not dependent on petroleum derived liquid fuels and reconnects people with their source."
