Volunteer to help with our panel series
VPO is putting on a year-long series of panels on how Peak Oil will affect various aspects of our life in the Lower Mainland. We need your help with organizing, promoting, and putting on the panels. Email Vandy Savage to volunteer.
Learn more about Peak Oil
Educate yourself about Peak Oil, its consequences and solutions by following the path on How to Boil a Frog’s Peak Oil page, reading the FAQ, and visiting our Resources page for suggestions on further research.
Talk to other people about Peak Oil
Change happens face to face. Let them know you’re worried. And when they ask you for solutions, be ready with a big idea or two.
Attend VPO meetup groups
VPO currently has only one monthly meetup (see events calendar or check our Facebook or Meetup.com pages). So come to the meeting, trade info, get questions answered, and work toward the goals on this TAKE ACTION page. But we need you to do more than attend – we need you to take a leadership role to help us achieve our next two goals:
1) We want to work our way up to weekly meetings, so each month different meetings can feature speakers, movie nights, and other organized activities that will make them more than just talking about the news and worrying about the future. We need you to volunteer to help us organize that, to anchor one meeting a month, to get speakers & bring in DVD’s, etc. There’s an opportunity for everyone to get involved!
2) Once this template is working at our downtown meeting, we want to start new meetings in others areas of town: Kits, Commercial Drive, Strathcona, the North Shore, Burnaby, Surrey, White Rock, Victoria, Sunshine Coast – you name it. When the merde starts to hit Le Fan, a lot of citizens are going to be looking for a place to get answers about relocalization and other peak oil solutions, and we want to be ready to serve!
Time is short, and the person who’s going to make the difference is YOU. Email Neil or Brennan for more info on how you can help.

Learn to live without your car
Whether it means taking public transportation, riding a bike, moving close to where you work, or finding work closer to where you live, it’s time to practice doing without your car. If you can’t do it, it’s time to change your life so you can.
Start to grow your own food
If you have a lawn, rip it up and plant a veggie garden. If you don’t, start with a windowbox or join a community garden. If no community garden is available, take the lead in establishing one. Depending on the stranger who manages your local supermarket to make sure there will always be food for you to eat is quickly becoming magical thinking.
Write letters to the Editor
Newspapers will not start to cover the peak oil story unless you demand it. Letters count. Make them short and witty. The more the merrier.
Start a village in your neighborhood
We all need to be part of a community to deal with Peak Oil, and it starts right in our own neighborhood. Village Vancouver offers support in starting your own village – it’s fun, it’s easy, and it’ll bring all kinds of new friends into your life.
Support local organic agriculture
NowBC is currently looking for people to be the point person for receiving and distributing organic food to neighbors. The food is delivered right to your door every Wednesday – you and others just order what you want online – and all you do is open your doors when a neighbor comes over to get their food. A great way to strengthen your community while eating healthy food.
